Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his first championship for over two years with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former number one, has had a challenging season, managing just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally separating with long-time coach Cervara.

Currently working with Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Moutet.

It is his maiden championship following the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt from March of that year.

Success also signifies the Russian has achieved 21 victories at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my children together, so to secure a title is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

His retrieving strategy and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had led some to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was over.

However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

Medvedev fought back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky opponent, winning four of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to create a third set.

Moutet defended 4 early chances in a close third set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he clinched the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to handle a volley after a lengthy match.
